The flag of Hawaii is the only U.S. state flag to have flown over a kingdom, a republic, a territory, and a state. The eight stripes represent the eight islands that comprise Hawaii and the field represents the Union Jack of Great Britian, signifying the respect the Hawaiians had for the English.
