The Illinois state flag starts with their state seal, which contains an impressive array of patriotic symbols: the bald eagle, thirteen stars and stripes on a shield, a ribbon banner, and sun rays. The word "ILLINOIS" was added in 1969 at the request of a soldier who was on duty in Vietnam.
